Divonne’s springs

The Dole massive in the Jura (at an altitude of 1680m) is a natural water tower for the for the piémont region. The water within the karst mountains runs along mysterious passages to reach the lake of Geneva and the Rhône river.  The source of the Divonne river is at the foot of Mount Mussy where water gushes from the limestone cliffs giving birth to the river which links Lake Léman to Versoix.

In the centre of Divonne, five "divona" springs (water considered sacred by the romans) gush from the depths of the earth carrying sand dating from the ice age which has filtered the water making it slightly mineralised.

Tour of the springs in Divonne in June, July, August and September for visitors and all year for group reservations.

The electricity factory

One of the oldest electricity factories in France still in a working state is in Divonne-les-Bains.
Built in 1887, it provided electricity for Divonne’s hotels and the thermal springs. A remarkable marble electric control panel distributed the electricity to the golf club, the hotels and the theatre.
EDF arrived in 1950 put an end to the electricity factory of the Pont des Iles which provided outdoor illumination including that of the place du Bief.
Howver EDF did not stop the electricity factory for the hotels as it continued its provision until 1960 and continued to serve as a stand-by until 1993.
The "Divonnelectro" association undertook its renovation and dynamic demonstrations are possible.
